"Knowing others is wisdom; knowing the self is enlightenment."

-- Tao Te Ching

I am a native born Oregonian.  I was born in The Dalles, and have lived in Cave Junction, in Salem, and in Oregon City. I received a B.S in Science Education from Oregon State University and have taught at the jr. high level.  I received a Master of Divinity degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL, in 1980.  Bend UMC is my fifth appointment in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference.  My record of service previously to Bend is:  Vale UMC, Vale, Oregon (1980-1984); Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, Blackfoot, Idaho (1984-1990); First United Methodist Church, Nampa, Idaho 1990-1996; and Trinity United Methodist Church, Idaho Falls, Idaho (1996-2005).

I am married to my wife, Cindy.  We met and were married in Juneau, Alaska.  Cindy is currently employed by the Bureau of Reclamation here in Bend.

We are the parents of three sons.  Our first son, Andy, is 26 and is an RN working at the University of Utah Medical Center on the cardiac unit.  Our second son, Levi, is 23 and is a recent graduate of the University of Idaho in Moscow with a degree in piano performance.  Both Andy and Levi are trained musicians who enjoy sharing their talents with the church.  And they are fun and fine young men.  Our third son, Jeremy, is 29.  He came to live with us when he was 10 years old as a Wednesday's Child.  He has several handicapping conditions that limit his career and living options.  He remains in Idaho Falls where he works in the Developmental Workshop.

We enjoy being busy and active.  Among the things we enjoy are: concerts, movies, and the theater; outdoor activities, such as hiking, skiing and camping; cooking, eating, and going out to eat with friends.  We have been active in the conference camping program as counselors, dean, and campers.  Cindy enjoys gardening, arranging flowers, quilting, cooking and fishing!  Thom enjoys singing in the church choir, doing crossword puzzles, reading, doing Jazzercise and motorcycling (He is just a beginner!).  We also enjoy our Akita, Sachi.
